History and Location

Kyoto is beautiful in all seasons. It has been 135 years since KANAMEAN NISHITOMIYA was established. We, KANAMEAN have thought much of the heart of Onko-chisin (The pursuit of new knowledge through studying what happened in the past and learning from the ancient knowledge of wise men.) since our establishment.

KANAMEAN NISHITOMIYA is located on Tominokoji Street and a little south of Rokkaku Street. This area is called Honeyacho, where many artisans have been making their livelihoods by creating the hones (called hone) of fans for years. Even now there are famous fan-shops, which have been passed down from generation to generation.

The Japanese word Kaname of KANAMEAN NISHITOMIYA has two meanings; 1. the rivet of a fan and 2. the center of the most important point. KANAMEAN NISHITOMIYA was named after the glorious history of fan making culture in the area and also embraces our hope to be the most important place among all the inns in Kyoto.

KANAMEAN is in the heart of Kyoto city, providing easy access to museums, Kyoto’s traditional craft shops, food markets, coffee shops, restaurants, movie theaters, popular department stores, famous brand shops, banks, post offices, and bookstores. Providing such convenience to our guests, KANAMEAN also maintains a traditional Japanese quiet environment. We invite you to share our peaceful atmosphere. KANAMEAN NISHITOMIYA warmly welcome our guests from the bottom of our heart.

Architecture and Facilities

KANAMEAN is a two-story Japanese style house with only 9 guest rooms. We are a small luxurious hotel with high quality services. There are 5 rooms on the 1st floor and 4 rooms on the 2nd floor. Our Japanese garden with seasonal flowers and Kyoto’s wooden architecture present you the exquisite ‘Kyoto.’

Food, Japanese Sake and Wine

You will experience the wonderful taste of Kyoto while savoring the culture & grace of life in this historical city. For dinner, we serve beautiful and tasty Japanese food, using seasonal ingredients. Generally, our meals do not contain meat dishes; however, if you would like to avoid seafood such as raw fish, we can offer meat dishes (ex. Japanese-style beef steak, sukiyaki, shabushabu and so on). For our vegetarian guests, we offer vegetarian dishes. For breakfast, you can choose either a Western style meal (with bread) or a Japanese style meal (with rice). Please note your preferences for dinner and breakfast when you make your reservation. We also offer a rich selection of Japanese sake and wine.
